Naspers donates R5 million to Gift of the Givers in support of relief efforts following KwaZulu-Natal floods
Following the devastating floods in the KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa that have compelled the government to reinstate the national state of disaster, Naspers has donated R5 million to Gift of the Givers to provide disaster relief and aid recovery efforts.
Gift of the Givers, who is already on the ground supporting disaster management teams in the province, will disburse the funds to relief efforts. These include, but are not limited to providing food, blankets and shelter to communities who have suffered severe and material loss caused by the floods.
Bob van Dijk, Group Chief Executive Officer of Prosus and Naspers, said:
“We are deeply sorry about the tragic chain of events and the lives and livelihoods that were lost. South Africa is our home country and we will do what we can to help. We hope that our donation can help save lives and restore the dignity of those in need, and we encourage everyone to do what they can during this difficult time.”
Phuthi Mahanyele-Dabengwa, South Africa CEO of Naspers, said:
“We are facing a humanitarian crisis as a country. The events in KwaZulu-Natal over the past week or so are terrible and we are deeply saddened by the devastation caused by the floods. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives and our thoughts are with the many displaced communities.”
Naspers donated R1 million in 2019 to support disaster relief and recovery efforts in Durban and the wider KwaZulu-Natal coastal area following the floods that year and donated R500 million to the Solidarity Fund and PPE to the value of R1 billion to support frontline healthcare workers in 2020 as part of its COVID-19 response.
