Naspers Chairman awards top prizes

The Naspers group’s top awards were presented at a luncheon after the annual general meeting today.
This year the Phil Weber award, the group’s highest accolade for performance, went to two individuals.
Over the past 20 years, Glen Marques has played key roles in the Naspers Group. As chief operating officer, he was instrumental in entrenching SuperSport’s influence in African sports broadcasting. While CEO of M-Net, he spearheaded its entry as a multichannel platform by launching the Series and Movie Magic channels, and set it on the path to becoming Africa’s preferred local storyteller by launching the kykNET, Channel O and Africa Magic channels. Most recently, he has headed Myriad Programming, which is responsible for content negotiation and purchasing in the video-entertainment segment.
The second recipient was Serge de Reus who heads the group’s tax function. Over the past seven years, he has built a formidable multi-jurisdictional tax team to navigate Naspers through increasingly complex and fluid international tax regimes. Under his leadership, Naspers enjoys an exceptional tax function. Serge has established strong relationships with tax authorities ensuring obligations are met by paying fair taxes to the countries and by extension the communities in which the group operates.
The 2017 chairman’s award for the person going the extra mile was presented to Gert Miggel, who joined Media24 in 2008. As a parking and security assistant, he is on the front-line of welcoming guests to the Media24 head office in Cape Town and ensuring the process is seamless. Mr Miggel received the award for the way he continually epitomises group values.

Each year Naspers awards the Order of Tafelberg to an outstanding business partner. The 2017 award went to Ferguson Films, which has produced some of flagship channel Mzansi Magic’s most popular dramas and telenovelas, including Rockville, Igazi and The Queen. The success of this new black-owned production company, founded and managed by celebrated actors Shona and Connie Ferguson is a model for actors and producers hoping to build businesses and create jobs through local storytelling.
